Tony Cottey: a painful early career memory of David Lawrence and Courtney Walsh

I genuinely cannot remember my first ball in first class cricket but I do remember playing a very early match v Gloucestershire at Cardiff.

I batted for around an hour in the first innings for 2 and about 45 minutes for a duck in the second innings. I probably had about 10 balls that pitched in my half between both those innings. I was caught short leg and leg gully in what was was not the greatest of starts to my career

I got hit in the ribs, forearm, hip, stomach and inside thigh umpteen times and was battered and bruised to say the least

I only faced two bowlers throughout. I think you may have guessed who they were?

Sid Lawrence and Courtney Walsh

Baptism of fire doesn’t even come close to describing that experience.

Anyway I managed to hang in for another 19 seasons so there must have been a few medium pacers and spinners that came my way.
