Edward Dodson: a failure of judgement at the Governors' Day match

My greatest sporting moment was to score 124 against Lancashire U19 at Emmanuel. To top it all Fred Bloy, the team manager, described my innings in an article in the local paper the following day as “the best innings I have seen since Alastair Hignell against Lancashire a decade ago”.

In contrast, as a boy, I was selected for the Felsted 1st XI at the end of my 5th form year on Governors Day in June 1980 against an Old Boys/Invitation side.

A sunny day and full house around the glorious 1st XI pitch, “The Front”, including my proud parents and grandparents.

My time came as the 4th wicket went down and I strolled nervously to the middle.

It was the end of the over so I was at the non-strikers end. No problem. Matin Olley (who would go on to be understudy to Paul Downton at Middlesex) was at the other end and whilst he too was in the 5th form he had been in the First XI all term so I was confident he would look after me.

2nd ball of the over he pushed it into the covers and called “Yes”. Of course I obliged and was duly run out by yards having not faced a ball. It was a long walk back.
