John M Brown: memories of scoring for Derbyshire

I am now the scorer for Derbyshire 1st XI and can claim to have recorded the very first ball in the First Division when it started in the year 2000.   There were several matches scheduled to start at the same time, but it was a wet day, and Derbyshire were the first team to begin their match.

Once when we played Northants in a 4-day match, the match finished early and the two counties decided to play a practice t20 match. The official umpires had gone, so I was asked if I (a qualified umpire at club level) would stand at the bowler's end while the Northants coaching staff took it in turns to stand at the striker's end. That was a fascinating experience as I saw Shahid Afridi and Hashim Amla, amongst others, up close.
