Daryl Mitchell: successfully facing Allan Donald - but not the next over

I was 19, in my first season at Halesowen CC. The opposition Knowle and Dorridge, their overseas player, none other than white lightning Allan Donald. Opening up, I nervously marked my guard, AD, away in the distance, scratched his mark. Adrenaline pumping I was ready for the battle ahead when a cry from the pavilion, in the thickest Black Country accent came ‘BOOOWLERS NAAAME PLEASE’. Instantly relaxed with a chuckle of laughter, I saw the first over out with aplomb, including a sumptuous back foot cover drive for 4. Perhaps too relaxed, I proceeded to leave a straight one off the 50-year-old dobber the very next over, game over!
