Graham Twigg: a Derek Randall catch

Surrey were playing Notts in a John Player Sunday League match at Byfleet.

There was a festival atmosphere, as it was the last time Surrey would play there, because the impending construction of the M25 would take away one side of the ground, leaving it too small for the professional game.

At one point in the Surrey innings Derek was fielding deep, near the boundary, in front of the, by now lively, beer tent.  The batsman hoisted one high into the clear blue sky. Derek stood beneath it, waiting, waiting, as the crowd held its collective breath.  He then took a step forward and caught the ball cleanly behind his back, to raucous cheers from the whole ground.

What a fabulous cricketer and what a great entertainer he was!
