John M Brown: Helped to a hundred and to a wicket

When I scored my first 100 at Honor Oak in 1960 - my partner knew I was on 99; I played a defensive shot which went about two yards to where a silly mid-on might have been - my partner called and I ran.   I got in at the bowler's end and doubled up in a mixture of relief, elation and pure joy, my eyes filling with tears.

Bowling at Bethnal Royal MH in the fifties, I bowled a ridiculously high full-toss - in days when such a delivery was still legal - possibly as a result of having read Conan Doyle's "Spedegue's Dropper" - the batsman aimed to hit it as it passed his shoulder, but he missed and it dropped almost vertically directly on top of the middle stump.   I walked back to the end of my run with what was probably the biggest grin I have ever made on the cricket field.
