Mark Butcher: my first century

I was asked to recall my first ever century...

I have a vague recollection that it may have been at Sanderstead CC in the month of August '81 (or was it '82). I know beyond doubt that I was playing for Addiscombe CC, following in the footsteps of my Dad and uncles Martin & Ian.

As with all my memories of childhood summers past, it was blazing hot and mum had made me wear shorts (meaning that the backs of your legs got burnt on the car seat) on the way to the ground. As for the innings, I can't recall a single stroke.

Unforgettable was the fact that I wielded a Slazenger colt, whilst sporting a quite magnificent Larry Gomes-style Afro.
