Phil Bainbridge: the opposition view of Brian Lara's 501 Not Out

Brian Lara scores 501 Not Out

Obviously when he got 501 there was a lot of talk about whether we had made a game of it. Were we just bowling to go through the motions?

Well we were still trying to get bonus points, we were relatively high up in the table and we felt our best option on the day was to get full bowling points, so we plugged away all the way up to 120 overs.

I thought the guys bowled pretty well, but no matter where you positioned the fielder, he’d just hit the ball into a different place. He had the uncanny knack of hitting the gaps all the time.

He was very unassuming, he doesn’t stare at you or have a look of you shouldn’t be bowling that kind of rubbish at me, he just didn’t have the arrogance that some players had.

Phil Bainbridge was captain of Durham County Cricket when Brian Lara scored 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham at Edgbaston on 6th June 1994
