John Harris: a Lord's experience thanks to Sir Pelham Warner

In 1955 as a young boy I came to Lord's early one morning and I saw Sir Pelham Warner sitting outside the Tavern and I asked him if he would be kind enough to sign my book. In those days you weren't allowed to collect autographs inside the ground and there was one particularly officious steward who was known as 'Hooky' for obvious reasons, who came round the corner. Sir Pelham said "You're in trouble now boys, here comes Hooky!"

He asked Sir Pelham "Are these boys annoying you Sir Pelham?" and Sir Pelham replied "No, these are my guests for the day". When Hooky was gone, Sir Pelham said to us "You'd better spend the day with me" and he took us up to his private box. What a day and what a memory!

John Harris
