John Waller: my father's promising career stifled

My Father, F.R Waller played for Hertfordshire. He captained Berkhamsted, as did his brother, Bob. He won the "Jack Hobbs" bat when he was about 14, prior to the war. He was accepted to be on Surrey ground staff but he joined the RAF. He played for the RAF and was picked to play for 'Combined Services' at Lord's but the game was cancelled due to the evacuation of Dunkirk! He served in Egypt and played for RAF Egypt. He was 2nd in command of the Gezira Sports Club in Cairo. It had the only grass cricket wicket in the Middle East.

After the war, as a working man, he was not able to take three days off work to play for the county. All due to money and a wife (who was not keen on him playing cricket) he could have played a lot more, who knows what might have been?
