Way back – probably in the eighties – for no particular reason, I waited outside the Pavilion at Lord’s well after play ended, watching the only other person around, a youngster in school uniform, collecting autographs as the occasional player came out.
At one stage a rather nondescript character in hat and overcoat appeared, and signed happily enough.
The man passed on, and as nothing else was happening, I asked the lad: “Who was that?”
He gazed at me, and replied with distinct scorn:
“Hutton.”
With much embarrassment, I managed to suggest that I had seen Yorkshire’s finest only in flannels, and did not recognise him in street clothes.
