Clive Storey: 1948, Durham v. Australia

In 1948 as 14 year old I went to Sunderland to see the 1948 Australian tourists playing against Durham. I was hoping to see the great Don Bradman but unfortunately he didn't, play, in fact he didn't travel to the North East so I was then hoping then to see an innings from the new 19 year old wonder boy Neil Harvey. He was out 2nd ball caught at short leg.

I did however see a brisk innings from the great Keith Miller. When Durham batted Miller opened the bowling with Sam Loxton and after 3 overs each the batsmen were given some respite when Ian Johnson came on bowling his off spin to allow Durham to reach a decent total.

Incidentally 3 years earlier when I lived in a small pit village called Clara Vale a young Australian RAF flyer from a nearby Airfield wandered into our ground asking if he play for us until his repatriation to Australia came through. He was known to us as "Dusty" and was the greatest cricketer we had ever seen

Three years later when watching "Pathe News" we saw the same man arriving with the 1948 Australian tourists and little did we realise that we had had in our midst the the great Keith (Dusty) Miller!
